First tattoo! Advice pls! How much did you pay for your tattoo? (If you don’t mind)

Hey guys! I’ve been looking for tattoo artists in Los Ángeles for a while and I found an Artist I really love. I plan on getting something similar to the one in the picture. It’s not the exact same but very similar. That size (my entire forearm) and in black and white. She told me that it shouldn’t take longer than 6 hours and it will be $1,300. Her work is amazing so I don’t mind paying that but what do you guys think about the price? How much was your tattoo and how big is it ? 🤗 Also, how much should I tip a tattoo artist? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!!

That’s WAY too much for that. Artists often over estimate tattoos they don’t want to do.  I wouldn’t pay more than $400 for that with no color.

I have these three dragonflies, in color. A good  amount of detail and shading. I also live in Los Angeles and went to a well known shop on Sunset. I paid 400 dollars, not including tip. I think that person is overcharging, maybe because they don’t want to do it, lol.

I have a whole thigh piece that goes up to my ribs with A LOT OF details and I paid no where near that much & mine is huge

I paid I think maybe 600/700  for this..around there I think..plus 120 in tip. (2 sessions). The artist I go to charged 100 an hour but she didn't charge me that exactly..I was tattooed for like 8 hours. Idk how she got her numbers. But some artist charge for draw time and consolation time. She just recently raised her rate to 150 too. 
You can ask your artist for a break down of how they got their numbers. Nothing wrong with asking.    But honestly..i wouldn't pay 1200 for just a forearm tattoo especially something generalized like what you are getting...(I don't mean that in a shitty way..I have flowers for gods sake lol)  ..unless their work was hella good and it was something they specialized in like trash polka or grimm work / something that only THEY can do....but maybe that's the right price for a full sleeve tho. But the highest rate ive ever seen was 200/250 an hour.

Is it just that line work or are you having it shaded? That’s going to make a huge difference. The minimum at my shop is $150, and then $125/hr after the first hour. I could see 3-4 hours if it’s just line work.

That’s a big tattoo but I’ve seen someone get a full colored big tattoo for less than that. You’re paying too much. Find a different artist

I’ve always payed $130-150 an hour for a tattoo. But since you’re in LA, prices will be higher. Tip should be just as other services-20%. So you’re looking at around 1600 total
