Is it a red flag that my 21 month old doesn’t know how to say a word anymore?

She used to say “flower” perfectly! It was her go to word for awhile and now the last month or so I’ve noticed she doesn’t know how to say it anymore. She now says “flowee” is this considered “losing an ability” she once had and a reason to make a doctor appointment?

As it’s just the one word, I wouldn’t call it losing an ability. Just keep an eye out, but I wouldn’t read too much into it at this stage. No point rushing to the doctor

"Flowee" Aww, that brought back so many memeories. My daughter did this same exact thing, she's 8 now and has no speaking issues.

Is it just one word? I have a son who is autistic and he does this a lot. He will have a period where he will say a word for a month or so, then he won't say anything at all. He's never said or repeated more than one word in a period and he isn't speaking. But this didn't happen once. It is a constant thing. 
I have a 4 year old who would occasionally forget how to say a word and would say it differently with incorrect pronunciation, but he isn't autistic and has no learning disability.

It can sometimes be a red flag but not usually by itself. Have you had her hearing checked and brought it up to your pediatrician at all? Would be worth mentioning.

I’d say since she’s still saying an approximation of the word it’s not the same as losing the word completely. On it’s own I wouldn’t be worried and would not consider this a red flag (I’m a teacher though, not a medical professional). If there are no other concerns I would just ask about it at your next appointment. If you have other concerns in addition to this then it might be worth making an appointment for piece of mind.
