Take time to grieve the relationship and to get to know yourself again. Speaking from experience here. It’s hard ( if not near impossible) to switch your brain from boyfriend to just a friend whom I have no emotional feelings towards overnight. Take some time apart. Be with yourself. Once you establish yourself and find balance then maybe feel the waters and see if friendship would be a healthy option for both of you.

Nope “let’s be friends” is a line to lessen the blow. I really don’t think you can be friends with someone after being romantically involved.
Unless, and this is a big maybe, you were friends years prior to being romantically involved so their was already a foundation for friendship

It took time for me. I was very angry and hurt after my ex broke up with me. Honestly, it took me a couple of years to come to terms with it, but I did finally forgive him (not that he even really needed to apologize. The breakup was best for our relationship and he was pretty kind about it) and tell him I was sorry for how I treated him after the breakup. We are now friendly, though not close friends. I wish him happy birthday and ask after his parents and tell him about pokemon snap on the switch :P My husband even plays games with him online.

I have a tough time just not talking to people I used to be close to? If they are civil, I'll talk to them & be friends.  
It's more them that get bothered, than me. It's just not in my nature to view people as only valuable if they date or fuck me? And I'm not generally a very jealous person. I am usually able to support my ex's new relationships. 
I mean, it didn't work out, so why get hung up on something I don't really want to repeat? 
If I do want to repeat it, well, obviously I can't, so why dwell? 
I've been hung up on people before, but if they want to be friends I won't take it out on them or act out. I think if you really love someone you want them to be happy even if it's not with you. 
So, my ability to be friends after a break up is more based on how they feel, and how they act, rather than my feelings. I like being friends.
