Hep B vaccine at birth?

Did you all allow the hep b vaccine at birth for your baby? They are saying it is optional. Just curious how many might have waited til baby was a bit older?

Yes, we had our son vaccinated while at the hospital and will be doing the same with our daughter. Hepatitis B is pretty easily transmitted because many people are unaware that they have it as they experience no symptoms for several months. Hep B often becomes a chronic infection when the body can’t clear the infection on its own and will eventually lead to liver failure. There are medications to manage the infection, but there is no cure. The vaccine is deemed very safe and effective by them CDC. I’m relieved that we can protect our children early from something that could be with them for the rest of their lives. Our son experienced no side effects from from the vaccination.

We had a home birth and asked about it at baby's first pediatrics appointment (at 5 days old) and they said they usually wait till 2 months for home birth babies. They just do it in the hospital to make sure babies get it, but if you want to wait a little while, that's totally fine!

We waited until their two month appt I think it was. I just wanted to let their immune systems clear my antibodies first, which for our son wasn’t a big deal but our daughter was in the NICU because my antibodies attacked her blood (I have an autoimmune disorder).

I didn’t get it for any of my kids. But they were all preemies and didn’t want to overload their little bodies.
