1 year old cat becoming overweight?

Question

This is my cat Taco. Hes starting to get pretty heavy. I’m not sure what the best course of action is. Do I take him to the vet or should I just work on it at home? He just turned 1 year old in March. He eats acana indoor dry food and pc nutrition first wet pouches 2x a day. He’s still playful and pretty active for the most part but he does lay down a lot. He’ll take a few steps then get lazy and lay down for a few mins in the middle of the floor before continuing on his way.

I’m not sure how much he currently weighs at the moment because he’s grown since his last vet appointment but my other adult cat is about 11 lbs and he is way heavier then her.

Just cut down on his feeding. It doesn’t matter what breed he is you should be able to easily feel his ribs when you gently press down on him

If you’ve not take him to the vet for a check up - it’s always good to do so and then bring your concerns of weight up if the vet doesn’t. 
But I will say my boy is 14lbs and will be 5 this year. He gets a small portion of wet food in the morning and evening + has dry food to nibble throughout the day if he chooses. My vet is aware of all of this, approves the brand of food and gives him a clean bill of health every time. He has zero worries of him being overweight or wanting to lose weight - he’s just a big boy 🥰

Do a genetic testing of your cat .  why because there are some breeds that have mixed breeds that are supposed to get that big and they look over weight but they're not it's just their breed.

Some cats are just big. I have a 19 pound cat and a 15 pound cat. Both healthy but just very large breeds. No fat rolls, just solid muscle. 
Take the cat to the vet. If the cat is overweight, switching to more wet food (lower in carbs) can make a big difference

He’s probably just growing to be a big cat. I used to have a cat very similar to him and he was huge. Not overweight, but just a big cat! He was tall too. Some breeds like tabby cats, can get really big. He does not look overweight to me though. Also, female cats generally weigh less than male cats.

I would just make sure you are feeding him the appropriate amount(check the food bag for serving suggestions) and exercise him every day. My 12 year old cat still likes to play with random stuff like marbles, socks, bathrobe ties, and the laser pointer. My 16 year old cat doesn’t because he has hip problems and diabetes so we monitor his food to keep him from getting too heavy.

you should take taco to the vet just for a check up. if they say they’re over weight they’ll give you some tips on how to manage it. who know taco might only be a pound or two over. i had obese cats one was 30lbs and the other was 20lbs we had to change their feeding schedule and cut back on treats. also had to make sure they drank a crap ton of water and worked out daily lol, they were able to drop a lot of the weight thankfully. the 30 pounder is now around 18lbs and the other one is closer to 12lbs !

He’s borderline from this view. They do look plumper when they lay down. For now I would reduce the wet pouches. I think those tend to be less healthy and more calorie dense
