Cervical check or membrane sweep?

I’m 38 weeks today, and I had an appointment with my OB who did a cervical exam to see if I’m dilated at all. I knew it was going to be uncomfortable/unpleasant, but HOLY MOLY, it messed me up! I had a good amount of bleeding immediately after and spotting that has continued throughout the day. I’ve had uterine cramps all throughout the day as well, however in the last hour or so it has become really intense. She told me I could experience some cramping but I didn’t expect this much.

My concern is, is this normal for a routine cervical exam or is it possible she performed a membrane sweep without telling me? Am I being paranoid? What has been your experience?
