How did you pay or plan to pay for IVF?

I’m feeling very overwhelmed with IVF looking like our only option, with a lower/middle-class income. Any financial advice?

We paid out of pocket, but we both have high paying jobs and fully recognize the privilege involved in being able to do that. Our insurance did cover some of the diagnostics, but not treatment or meds. Some thoughts that may be helpful- Our clinic worked with a third party (ARC) that coordinated payment for packages - either paid in full or financed at reasonable rates. It made our expenses $1k less, just by going through them. Ask your clinic if they work with anything like this. Some of the pharma companies also have discount programs on their fertility drugs (ex, Merck), either income-based or otherwise - I saved 10% on each of my trigger shots by submitting their simple form and my receipt….if it had been Gonal F, the savings would have been significant.

We paid for meds out of pocket which was about $3k. Then for the rest about $22k  we got a credit card with 0% interest for 20 months and just made a budget that allowed us to pay it all off before those 20 months were up. We got thrown a huge wrench when COVID hit but we still were able to make it work. Some clinics have programs based on your income so definitely suggest looking into that, as well as shopping around for meds. For us my husband makes to much and we didn’t qualify for any help so finding discounts on meds was huge.

We were going to just pay cash. Didn't end up needing to as I got pregnant with clomid finally! But yeah we were going to just pay it cash.

We sold our house last year and made a significant profit so we used some of that cash. I recognize that is a very fortunate situation for us to be in and is not the norm. If we had not sold our house we wouldn’t have been able to move forward with ivf. We are currently renting.

You may want to do a google search to see if there are any non-profits that help support this or offer grants. I’m in NC and had a friend going through IVF and I found one for her if they were going to need another round but she ended up pregnant on that round of IVF.

We have been paying for all fertility things out of pocket by ourselves. We have worked extremely hard to get to this point. 
I personally do not feel it is appropriate to ask others for money to try and have a child.
