How soon are you suppose to have a pediatrician?

I have no idea when I should have a pediatrician lined up for after I give birth. What’s the process with it? When is the first time they go to the dr. once they’re born?

my hospital wouldn’t let us leave without a newborn appointment scheduled within 24 hours after discharge. then we scheduled a 2 week appointment and his next appointment is a 2 month appointment. we got our ped through our insurance.

Our hospital has a pediatrician on staff when baby is born. It just happened to be the pediatrician we wanted for baby so he was there for the birth and all appointments afterwards.

My ob asked us at one of our last appointments who we wanted. She noted it in my medical records so when I gave birth, they made the appointment for us before we left. 
I live in a small town so the hospital and clinic are connected so it makes some things very easy for us

Babies should be seen 24-48 hours after hospital discharge to check in on weight, feeding and bilirubin. Subsequent follow up depends on how that initial appointment goes.
They will also need to be seen at 10-14 days, 2,4,6,9 and 12 months for check ups. 
Most hospitals will want to know about your first appointment before you can be discharged. In some hospitals that have pediatrics, the appointment will be made for you unless you specify otherwise.

My midwife did a couple of home visits after my homebirths so we saw the pediatrician at 2 weeks with both.

My Dr does prenatal care, labor and delivery, and pediatric care for newborn to age 3. This means I had her for my entire pregnancy, she helped with the birth of my daughter, and she does all of my daughter's check ups for the first 3 years. 
I know not everyone has this option, but I'm super thankful for this and would recommend it if you can find a Dr like this!

I’d just do research on the most credible, popular, and best reviewed pediatricians in your area. Once you find one, call and let them know when you’re due and they’ll tell you about the process. 
The pediatrician we go to sees the kids at 2 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, and then for their routine vaccine appointments/wellness checkups.
