Bright red spotting at 38 weeks pregnant

I am 38+1 weeks pregnant and just went to the bathroom and noticed some bright red spotting. There wasn’t a ton of blood just some spotting when I wiped and it has since stopped. I never had this with my son so wondering if anyone knows whether this is normal? I called my doctors office and unfortunately my doctor was not there today. The receptionist told me if the bleeding continues or I start having contractions/ cramping to go to the hospital. So far so good, but still a little concerned over what might be causing the blood. I had an appointment on Thursday and my cervix was closed at the time. Anyone else experienced this?
