Can someone please help me understand a few things about breastfeeding?

I’m a FTM and breastfeeding has been pretty confusing for me!! My son is just over 5 weeks old and up until maybe a few days ago I had a really good supply of milk but he would eat for so long, like 20-30 minutes every three hours. A few days ago my supply seems to have decreased a lot. My boobs feel much less full and don’t really overflow anymore. He has also only been eating for about ten minutes at a time, but it’s so confusing because I can’t even tell if he’s getting anything. I don’t really understand or know what to do.

yes! it’s normal for your boobs to not feel full once your milk comes in and starts to regulate. you don’t store much milk in your boobs, it starts producing when baby latches. are you feeling letdown? is he swallowing?

Things regulate after about that long, so what you’re describing is very normal. Also, babies get more efficient w nursing as time goes by. As long as baby is having plenty of wet diapers, they’re good. Don’t stress about dirty diapers bc ebf babies can go like 10 days without pooping

sounds like your milk is regulating but if you want to stimulate your supply and have a little milk stache pump for 10min or so after he eats to keep stimulating more milk and build up a bit of milk ❤

Listen to if he is swallowing while he eatings its a little gulp noise and that will tell you if he is getting anything

As long as baby is gaining and has 6-10 wet diapers a day then it should be fine! Like many others have commented, after a while babies will start to “empty” you out a lot quicker! My LO went from 45mins to 8-10min nursing sessions!

The way you know if a baby is getting food is by wet/dirty diapers and weight gain. Length of nursing and fullness of breasts has nothing to do with it. Babies get better at nursing and your supply will regulate and you won’t ever feel “full” but there is milk.

As baby grows they get a lot more proficient at getting milk out quick. So it feels like you have less milk and spend less time feeding but baby just has gotten better at its job of nursing
