Do you think its safe for kids to return to in school learning?

My 5 yr old will be starting kindergarten in Aug.  and im so worried about sending her to in school learning vs. Virtual with this new covid 19 delta variant wave approaching. I would like to know what are yall thoughts about this and what have yall decided?

My son will be starting this fall, him and his sister have been in preschool most of the year and we’ve had no issues with covid, just the normal kid colds and stomach bugs.

I can't speak to the Delta variant and what will happen - but speaking as someone who works in the elementary schools I was pleasantly surprised by how safe I felt in schools. Now each school is different, and each area has their own way of doing things. From my observation, I felt like COVID was being spread to children at home and not among younger students in classrooms with all the precautions in place. COVID was being spread between adult staff, or older students who were likely not strictly following protocols. Again, not sure what September will look like, but those are my thoughts from this past year (I live in CT).

It’d be nice if virtual was even an option. Chicago public schools have already opened and closed enrollment for the Fall virtual program and limited it to children with a qualifying medical exemption with a doctor’s sign off.

My kids started back in early July (year round school). They are still requiring masks, which I am not a fan of. The fact is that children are not vulnerable to Covid. They are not the drivers of spread. As of last week, something like 335 children in the US had died (with) Covid since the pandemic began. From what I've learned, the Delta variant may be spread easier, but it isn't as lethal. And Covid isn't nearly as lethal as when it first appeared on the scene anyway, since we have a better understanding of how to treat it.
In my opinion, kids are not in danger returning to school. Of course, one can always point to tragic examples. However, 99.99% of kids are completely fine  I think it is in kids best interest to return to normal. We've "flattened the curve, hospitals are not overwhelmed, we have a vaccine for those who choose... It's not March 2020. It's time to live life.

I wouldn’t but I know not everyone has that option and most schools are helping those situations out. But if you can I would keep the kid out for now, not worth the risk IMO

I’m a 2nd grade teacher in CT and I have 4 kids - I feel completely safe sending my kids to in person school. All of the kids in my class who got Covid got it from their parents and none of them spread it to anyone else in the classroom despite the fact that we had a very large class that was possible to socially distance in a tiny room. We were very careful about masks and hand washing and cleaning and used barriers when eating and while we had MANY quarantines out of an abundance of caution, overall the students did not spread it among each other. I know everyone’s personal situation is different but that has been my experience for what its worth. 😊

I think it depends what she’s ready for. Some kids are begging to go back and some prefer virtual. I would make the decision based on what your daughter will thrive with, not the delta variant. Unless you have someone who is high risk living with you as well. Statistically, it’s way more likely for someone her age to get more sick from the flu than Covid. Covid really doesn’t effect most kids at all. So if the flu is something you haven’t worried about before then you should send her to in person classes if that’s what she wants :)
