When should a child be able to wipe their own butt after pooping?

My step sons father has to wipe his butt and he’s 7 years old. Is that normal?

For a typically developing child, I would say that is not normal. My kindergarten students are expected to be fully independent in their toileting, and they’re 4 - 6 years old.

My oldest did by the time she was 4.5 years or so. 
Kids need to be independent in the bathroom for most kindergarten classrooms.

Nah I think that’s just too old and it’s time for him to learn to wipe his own butt. When they are first potty trained I can understand, their arms are too short to reach as well but at that age they definitely can on their own. He’s also at the age of primary school? How does he manage at school? Unless there’s something developmentally wrong sure.

I don’t know when it’s expected but my 4 year old wipes her own butt 90% of the time. She still asks us to check her work though.
