Advice from someone experienced with dogs. I

I have an American bulldog. Hes very sweet and loving. But he doesn't do well with other dogs. He seems perfectly fine with hem will even play or cuddle. But if one of my kids start to cry and he senses panic, he launches for the other dog and bites and won't let go. I'm assuming it's because he has anxiety ?

(I only know this from when my dad used to live with us and he had his dog(male)).

My children really need to be in their own room, but I worry all of the time, and always bring them back into my bed.

I would feel a lot safer if they had a dog to sleep in the room with them.

I would let my dog but he would bark and whine all night not being with me.

I was wondering if I got a female dog as a puppy maybe he would act differently.

If anyone has any advice on what they think about this idea.

Also wondering if anyone had any breed suggestions, I live in a apartment so no "aggressive" breeds.

Please no negative feedback. Thank you!

Edit: hes not aggressive, he's very nice to other animals people and children. Its just when he senses panic that he does this I think he's just trying to be protective but he gets overall anxious and reacts the wrong way. I really wouldn't say he's aggressive more like a weird tick... but I'm wondering, because it was an adult male dog he wasn't used to, if it would be different if we got it as a puppy and raised it in the family. I say female because they tend to be gentler with opposite sex. I also plan on getting him fixed before hand so that might help.

I guess I just wanted to know if any one thought it was possible or even a good chance it would work out differently.

I would love to get therapy unfortunately its just not in the cards for me right now. .but either way, a security system won't make me feel safe enough, though wouldn't be a bad idea for extra protection, someone can break in, and the alarm would go off id still have to wait for someone to show up.

Thank you ava I really appreciate your feedback. I wasn't aware they had trial period options, definitely something to look in to !
