Say it with me: MIND YOUR BUSINESS

AJ

Friendly reminder not to talk crap about other women’s pregnancy choices! I’ve been seeing a lot of daft comments across the apps that casually criticize the midwifery model of care by women who have been seeing midwives 🤯

It is not acceptable to do this because you have received it during your pregnancy without educating yourself on how it differs from a traditional OB model with physician oversight. Furthermore, if some portion of your care does not work for you, SPEAK UP! It is mind blowing that someone could be dissatisfied with their healthcare while gestating for months and only be speaking to strangers about it on the internet. You have the right to change your model of care at any time based on what you think is best for you and your baby.

There’s lots of research to support that the traditional model of OB care just doesn’t work for some women. There’s also tons of real life experience to support that it works just fine for some other women and both things can be true. However, passive aggression and making comments undermining the competence of midwives and nurses buries the value of the non-traditional maternal care model for those who actually seek it out. We don’t need to adopt an “ethnocentric” approach to healthcare… what the next person does is not going to ruin your experience and we don’t need to control the narrative on normalcy.

Common, normal, standard are all fake news in the women’s health, OB, and urogynecology space which we all know is outdated for us. No two pregnancies between women or even the same woman, are the same so don’t be that person perpetuating antiquated and inconsiderate ideals around the experience of pregnancy or the birthing experience because “your hospital” or “your birth center” does XYZ.

Our rights during pregnancy and birth include the right to choose what is correct for us and our families. Whether that’s natural birth or a planned c-section, judge not another woman’s uterus lest ye also be judged ✨
