He has an STD

So I started talking to this guy. And he just told me he has herpes...I am very happy he told me before anything happened with him. But I honestly have never been with anyone with an STD and I am 25 yrs old and have never had an STD(yes I have been tested recently and am clean). I really like him and it does not change my opinion of him. However; I do not know enough about herpes to know how safe I should feel about potentially not getting it too. He said that as long as he wraps it up and we dont do anything when he has a flare up/outbreak(which has only happened once), I should be fine. But he could just be saying that. So I wanted some opinions from others based on experience or just their own personal opinions, I guess.
