Please be respectful to your healthcare team

I recently read a birth story where the woman slapped her nurse because she felt that her nurse was mocking her request for an epidural when originally the plan was for an unmedicated birth. Other women commented saying she deserved it.

I know that the patient/nurse relationship isn’t always perfect; however, as a nurse myself, I’ll like to say this:

1) If you don’t get along with your nurse, you can always request someone else.

2) Please be honest and open with your nurse. We are trying to help you. The best way we can is when you tell us how we can.

3) You are your best advocate so please speak up.

4) Please... Do not abuse your nurses verbally or physically. Violence is NEVER the answer.

Healthcare has one of the highest rates of workplace violence. As nurses, there are hospital policies that are supposed to protect us but we are often told to look the other way, ignore it, and not report it. Most of us has been hit, spat, kicked, etc. and are told that this is just the way it is.

So please... if you don’t agree with your nurse or other healthcare professional, please speak up and request a change.

Thank you!

P.S: Would love to hear some positive stories about your nurses if any!
