Scabbed Nipples

I just had my baby boy 4 days ago. Since initial latch the little dude gnawed my nipples pretty good and they scabbed over early on. Every latch makes me cringe in pain and bite my lip and the whole nursing session I’m in a dull pain.

Today while burping after nursing my little spat up some blood - not a ton but definitely some. I’m assuming he sucked off part of my scab and duct - does this sound like a possibility? I’m monitoring it and plan to call my ped if it happens again.

Should I consider using a shield until my nipples are healed? His latch seems good otherwise but since he destroyed my nips day one it’s hard for me to say if there are other issues. I don’t remember having it this bad with my first. Thoughts and advice on both the bloody spit up and my poor scabbed nips are appreciated.
