Thoughts on sound machines

Question

What are your thoughts on sound machines or white noise machines? We’re expecting our first baby in May and our house is LOUD with 3 giant dogs and thin walls. I’m a little nervous that if we use one the baby will be so used to having it that if something happens he won’t be able to sleep without it. This happened recently with my nephew as their power went out, but they also tip toe around the house when he’s asleep. I just want him to be able to sleep through anything

Never tip toe or whisper around a sleeping baby. Best advice ever. 
We have the hatch more so so that she never is sleeping in dead silence. That’s not a good habit. 
We have big loud dogs. Plus, her room and window is right at our fence that has loud barky dogs that are always locked outside (shitty neighbors). My girl can sleep through anything! Dogs barking, cars, music, talking, tv, and even construction. 
Her nicu room was SO loud. Like we had to wait for the jackhammer to stop to have a conversation with her doctors. They were doing construction on the room directly below hers. She slept like nothing was going on.
My girl is 4 months old and not dependent on white noise to sleep but she does prefer to sleep not in silence. 👍🏻

We usually don’t use any sound machines for our daughter (6 weeks). We have two dogs that bark like crazy at the UPS man and she never wakes up. I can vacuum, do the dishes, cook with pots and pans banging and it’s no problem. She sleeps through everything. We do use the baby shusher sometimes when she is especially fussy and we need a break from doing the shushing ourselves.

You can run into the same problem if baby gets used to sleeping in too much silence! Honestly, we all have our sleeping preferences and it’s totally normal. My husband can sleep through a train but has to have a really specific room temp; I need ear plugs because his breathing alone keeps me up but i can sleep in any temp. Don’t get so hung up on trying to make it so that baby isn’t “dependent” on or off something. We all are a little bit weird with sleep! Sound machines rock for decreasing noise startle and helping to promote more restful sleep. Using one also lets you create a familiar sleep environment when you’re out of your house like in a park or traveling ! I have the hatch

We have a white noise elephant that takes batteries. But my 8 wk old doesn't like the white noise. I have an app on my phone that does white, pink, brown, and blue noise. His favorite seems to be the pink noise. It goes for 5 mins and slowly fades out over those 5 mins. Usually have to hit play twice and he's out for 4 hours. As long as my phone is charged, we don't have to worry about the power going out.

We use this one for my daughter, she prefers the ocean or brook sounds and we use the timer so it is only on when she is falling asleep. It has a power cord and can take batteries, we also have the travel version that runs off batteries.

We use one with our son, we thought we’d be able to have him to sleep through anything like our daughter but nope. With any noise he’d wake up and stay awake then we’d have to deal with an overtired baby which is a nightmare, so we decided to just use a white noise machine cause he needs sleep. We use the hatch

My son loves ours!  He has 2 older brothers and a lot of the time I can only get things done when he’s sleeping so it definitely helps drown out background noise.

We use this one and love it! We have a preschool upstairs from us and it definitely helps drown the noise. My now 2 year old is attached to it though and when the power goes out he does wake up. We have a rechargeable one from the same company though and that fills the gaps. We’ve travelled with both and it helps immensely to make things feel familiar.
