Help?

Question

Ok so my daughter asked me a question I didn’t know how to answer. So I said, ONE. The Human One. The question (she’s 15) was “Mom, how many races are there?” I’m totally not trying to cause issues and am fully aware that I lack education on this subject so I’m truly trying to learn. IS there a number or amount? Was there a better answer? Google has been no help. Thanks for anyone who answers without judging. Truly trying to better myself.

Race is a social construct. There are many cultures and backgrounds and each one is special and can teach us things.

Love the answers here. I would agree with using the words “nationalities” or “ethnicities” to discuss why humans can have different features. But as humans our DNA is all like 99% the same. It’s not about saying anything like “I don’t see color.” It’s important to acknowledge we might look different or have different abilities but at the end of the day are more alike than anything.

I agree that it’s a social construct and it’s defined differently politically/socially depending on the culture. Race doesn’t mean the same thing in the US, France, Brazil, Senegal, etc. So to me there isn’t some objective definition. Ethnicity may be a bit easier to define on a global level.

I would probably say “there’s tons; every single creature is part of a race, humans, dogs, cats, snakes, spiders.(Even fast cars can be part of a race.) They’re all different and special but we’re all just creatures living together.”

I think breaking down the differences between ethnicities and nationalities would be a good place to start. Explain the difference, and go from there. She’s at an age where school is going to start really covering different cultures, societies, etc. I always love my anthropology classes because of this. 
You could always start going over your family history (genealogy) and see where that leads. That could make the topic easier to discuss and learn about.

There are three major racial groups in the world- think of of them as major tree limbs. Caucasian, Asian and Black. Within each of those, multiple ethnicities branch off. For example in Asian... Chinese. Japanese. Genetically middle easterners are considered to fall under the Asian limb too.
