Helmet?

Hailey

My babes was breach my entire pregnancy so his head was flattened out like a pancake against my ribs. I had a c section so obviously his head wasn’t shaped through the birth canal. He’s nearing the 5 month mark and while his head has gotten better, I’m still concerned it’s not changing fast enough. The doctors keep telling me that they’re doing a wait and see approach as it could get better on its own once he starts crawling and the muscles get stronger in his neck.

He already does a ton of tummy time to strengthen his neck and I try to get him to sleep on the back of his head but he insists on sleeping on the sides.

Anyone else in the same boat? I’ve emailed my doctors to request a referral to a specialist but I just wanted to get others opinions while I wait.

Doctors say the head should be pretty much be like a circle but my LO is more like an oval

Pretty sure he has scaphocephaly

I should’ve taken more pictures of his head shape when he was younger but it was usually hidden by his chunky neck

This was a few weeks after he was born

About two months old

And today

I guess my main concern for his head shape is due to his father and fathers side of the family start balding towards the end of high school 😭 My husband has a “unique” shape head that wouldn’t really be noticeable if he had hair but since he really doesn’t… well he just wears hats to hide it. I want my babe to have a nice looking bald head when he’s older!

I want to say they usually give it until about 6months to see if skull shape is able to correct itself. I would definitely keep advocating for him though if you’re still concerned when he goes for 6month check up

My first had torticollis (stiff neck on one side from position inuteru, fwiw I gave birth vaginally, that doesn't necessarily make a difference here) and that caused plagiocephaly. We did see an infant PT to help with the stiff neck once and got some exercises to do to loosen and strengthen his other side. The pictures you posted make it kind of hard to see exactly what is going on, the pictures they will take are from straight above and then draw a line ear to ear and nose to middle of back of head and want the four quadrants equalish and then straight from the side for ear placement related to the curve of the head and front of the face straight on for symmetry of eyes and ears, but it looks really minor from the pictures you posted. I say that not to say don't ask for a referral if you feel it necessary, always advocate for your child if you feel it is the right thing to do! But I do want to say that it looks really minor and there is good reason they wait until 6 months because the plates in the head don't fuse until a year so there is plenty of time still and once they are sitting and crawling these things really do fix themselves if they were minor up until that point. My sons was worse than your pictures, although not terrible either, and it completely corrected itself by doing tummy time and encouraging him to look both ways when he slept and diaper changes and then once he was upright more often it all adjusted itself before his plates fused around a year.
