How do you know when your ready to have sex?

This might be a pretty personal question but how do you know if your ready to have sex for the first time? I've had two ex's in my life and I never had sex with them because it didn't feel right and they always made me feel bad about it. Now I'm worried that since I'm with my current boyfriend if I ever happens were he wants to have sex I might feel bad to say no and go through with it even though I don't know if I'm ready or not. Mostly because I don't want our relationship to be how it was with my ex's. So I'm asking for the best advice on how to tell if your ready or not. Is it a physical thing? A mental thing? Or a feeling you have?

Being that I came from a household that was very conservative, highly religious, and the fact that my mother threatened me and said that if I got pregnant I was out of the house, that was enough to keep my pants on until I was 20. By the time I was 20, I already owned my first house, car, etc. so that if I did ever get pregnant, I would have somewhere to go and I wouldn’t have to deal with her crap. Because unfortunately grown-up decisions come with grown-up consequences. What to do if you end up getting a sexually transmitted disease or infection or your cycle is late, being well educated and prepared for your sexual health as well as Pregnancy prevention, or if a child is conceived, miscarriages etc. you are ready when you can handle the unfortunate things that can happen emotionally physically mentally one sex happens.￼ when you can handle everything on your own, if you got pregnant or had a baby, because a man sticking around, is not guaranteed, he can dip out anytime he wants. And leave you hanging. Don’t complicate your life, be responsible, get well educated, be preventative, etc ￼

for me, i knew when i was ready was when i felt okay with the act. i had felt before doing it was that i just felt a little uncomfortable. like i wanted to but it didn’t feel right. And then one day, something switched and i was like, i want to and i was just ready mentally to go through with it.
