Texas has gone too far…

Reposting for a friend who wishes to stay anon. Side note from me: Fascists ban books.

I am a middle and high school librarian in the Houston area of Texas. I am gonna stay anonymous as I don't want to risk my job if someone may know me...which I know some use this app in my circle. The book removal in Texas is something parents should be concerned about and need to stand up against. Go in and talk to the librarian and see how many books ate being removed and the process. Our district is going against the normal process and I am now required to box up books weekly deemed "inappropriate". In the past any contestation about books investigated and looked into but the books stayed on the shelves until the board voted to remove it. Every single book that has a single parent complaint I am having to remove right now for later decision. And the complaints are absurd. I have had to remove all sorts of civil rights books because parents are saying it teaches reverse racism. Any book that is deemed vulgar or obscene in any way which the definition of that changes backs on which board member is talking. One wants any book with any word that could be considered swear words taken out (ass amd damn for instance) and one thinks anything that shows non godly relationships of any sort need to go. And I have had ro take out any book that even mentions a lgbtq relationship in any way. I have zero say if I wanna keep my job and I do because when kids come asking for books I can direct them to other libraries or help them navigate the public library. I have kids who read some of the banned materials have given hope and staved off suicide (suicide prevention is also talked about as being removed as to not glamorize it). I have removed 428 titles in 5 weeks. This is negligent, dystopia, and scary. Knowledge should be accessible and thr amount of kids me and the one more open kinded counselor talk to daily about the fear of not seeing anything like them on the shelves is heartbreaking. I am a librarian...yet now I am also a therapist to the kids who are gay or bi or confused or have gay parents or want to learn about civil rights, native Americans, Michelle Obama-yes I took off her books due to a parents complaint last week. You need a parent signature to get a public library card and a lot of students whose parents are out for any and all titles don't won't let their kids have public library access. The school was the only place for them and now everything from lawn boy to the diary of Malcom X or books on the trail of tears to Judy Blume, twilight, and pretty little liars is being questioned amd removed. This is dangerous and terrifying. If you are a parent in Texas please watch out for your libraries and know some libraries (like mine) are being forced to remove a book after a single parent complaint right now. At this rate we may as well shut the door to the library because I am only gonna have a few book genres left.
