Lack of speech - Concern or no?

Question

17 months old for reference
Can say Mum, Dad, Nan and ‘narna’ for banana but won’t really say Mum/Dad purposely for our attention as such, just when he feels like saying it
Doesn’t really seem to want to copy as you say words (tried all different words/animal sounds which he did used to copy but has since got little interest in copying)
Babbles constantly which is good
Would you be concerned at this age?

My daughter is 17 months old and says daddy to pretty much everything and everyone. She’ll try say doggy but it sounds like daddy. She tries to say Peppa pig but it’s more like da da dig 😂 she’ll get there in her own time though. My son was speaking full sentences when he was 18 months old, he still doesn’t stop speaking now 😂

My son is the exact same way. He was a late walker too, didn’t walk until 16 months. So I think he’ll be a late talker too. He says “no” and “hey/hi” but that’s it.

I was concerned with our girl she is the same she’ll say mama, dada, night, bye bye, and bring us things if she wants help but doesn’t talk much and has zero interest in working with us. When I brought it up at her appointment the pediatrician mentioned a hearing test because she has had a few ear infections and we are going to go ahead and start with early intervention. Not sure what all that entails because she is our first baby so I guess we’ll see.

Did he walk early? Mine is pretty much the same way. He walked really early and is way ahead in fine motor skills but isn’t super interested in talking. I’m not super worried about it. It think kids develop in their own time. He doesn’t have any other issues that would be cause for concern. We have a checkup next week so I guess we’ll see what the dr says.

*UPDATE* I went to the docs and spoke with them about it (and a few other things) and they are going to refer him to check for possible autism

I would say it isn’t something to panic about but if he is no longer doing things he previously did it would be reasonable to have his hearing tested. If he isn’t able to hear what you are saying it is difficult to learn language. A relative of ours had unclear speech and was put off by their pediatrician but had an amazing turn around when they had ear tubes placed and could finally hear clearly. Don’t be afraid to be an advocate for your child if you feel something isn’t right.

The CDC recently updated the milestones for children. 3 or more words is considered perfectly normal for this age now.
