OHSS ??

Question

Is there any way to know if you will probably have OHSS prior to stims? Since you get more follicles / embryos is it actually good to have even though it is very painful? This is a very stupid question I’m sure but I am new to IVF

If you had a high Antral follicle count or high AMH your doctor will know you have a risk of OHSS and will most likely use a conservative approach to stims. I had a high Antral count and slightly high AMH so I used the lowest dose of stims my clinic generally uses. 
They will also monitor your Estrogen level throughout and can tell by how quickly it is rising/how high it is. 
I did end up with OHSS, but my doctor was proactive and used a Lupron Trigger, only allowed a frozen transfer and started me on two medications immediately following my retrieval. I followed all the instructions they gave me for follow up care and my OHSS resolved quickly and was never worse than a mild/moderate case.

No, you’d prefer not to have it. Aside from pain…if you have a whole bunch of eggs, it’s likely there are many immature eggs or ones that don’t fertilize.  Anything can happen though! That’s why it’s such a crapshoot🤪 but worth it in the end…eventually💖

It’s hard to say, I had a high high number of eggs but never ended up with OHSS. You need to pay close attention to what your doctors tell you regarding what to eat, drink, etc. but at the end of the day it can go either way. I had a lot of monitoring too which helped.

It’s hard to say. I was at risk of getting it because I had PCOS and lots of follicles. They saw 20+ on each side. On the day of retrieval, they got only 12 eggs, and I felt perfectly fine the next day. So I never got OHSS.
