Why is there a shortage of baby formula?

My child is 2 now and I'm not personally affected, so I have no clue what's going on. I'm seeing posts everywhere about people not being able to find formula anywhere. Why is that? What's going on? I feel awful for all these parents looking for formula for their poor babies 😔
I'm so sorry for what everyone is going through! My son was only a couple months old in 2020 when crazy people started stocking up on toilet paper, kleenex, baby wipes, baby formula, etc. People were apparently buying the formula because it lasted longer than milk 🙄 I remember how terrifying that was since I couldn't breastfeed. I was lucky that I only had to go to different stores to get his formula, but I was always able to find it somewhere. I hope this all gets sorted out soon.

So similac had a big recall of their formula that caused a lot of people to stop trusting in their brand. That caused a big switch to other brands, mainly enfamil or generics. Those companies couldn’t keep up with demand + a whole bunch of supply chain issues due to the crap economy, war, covid, worker shortages, you name it. That has caused people to freak out of course, so when they find formula they often buy more than they need especially if it’s a speciality formula for allergies or whatever (think the toilet paper fiasco of 2020). All in all, it’s been a disaster. I BF 95% of the time but have a can of earths best in my house in emergencies. I can still find that formula at most targets. I see Gerber around too. But enfamil and similac have vanished near me

It is rough!! We are on our third formula now because of it.  Such a bummer.

Similac had a recall and now people were forced to change what they were giving their kids. Many people also freaked out and bought all of the diapers and wipes because they thought that buying a ridiculous amount would be necessary causing another shortage of products. I think it's just the times we live in. Anytime someone feels uncertain of their future the preppers come out.

I don’t understand either.  Similac pro advance only had a recall about a month ago, then came out with a newer improved formula.  Neither of them can be found right now.  We were able to find the liquid kind of the new improved formula for a little bit but they are $10 and last for 1 day.  It’s been a struggle and my baby’s been fussy I’m sure because of the formula changes we have to buy whatever we can find.
