Spotting? When to take a test?

Good morning,

I’ve got an almost 10 year old but I didn’t spot back then so wanting some advice please.

I woke up today with some light spotting, about an hour later it was heavier but not enough to use a tampon for so can’t be period.

My period is due in 5 days and is normally on time, never early or late.

When would you do a pregnancy test?

I’ve been trying for 3 years with my fiancé and really don’t want to get my hopes up, but every time I do one and think I’m pregnant it says negative :(
