Rent increase just priced me out of my apt.
So I have lived in an apartment about 4 yrs, paid on time every month and never had a complaint about my unit or me ever. Got a notice from my landlord that stated rent would be increased 60 days from now by 12% due to "inflation". This was a paper notice on the door. The. A week later got an email telling the whole building that with the 25% rent increase they will also be requiring direct withdrawal only amd sent us a link to a new pay site. I called and asked was it 12 or 25 and the office said they had decided 25%. Looked into it and it is totally legal where I live as long as they give me 30 days notice and notify us of any raise over 5%. So looking for a new place on a crazy expensive market. I fucking hate greedy landlords. They gave no reason for the insane amount besides they could fill them at that cost. Very angry today...
***I read my local tenancy laws and I contacted a lawyer. Not sure why people are telling me to look into things. I said in the post I already looked into it. I can see some increase with inflation but a 9% national inflation vs a 25% rent increase after several raises in the past few years isn't justified to me. They aren't making any improvements, we pay all our own utilities, we pay for our own parking, and we all had huge security deposits so unless they need to renovate an entire apt our huge security deposit covers it. Every state needs a rent control law. The building next to ours raised their rent 75% in April. The fact my landlord, who this building plus 1 other is his only income parks his BMW I8 and lives in the top floor 4 bedroom apartment and just got back from Fiji with his wife while he prices out tenants left and right because he an is gross. And sadly very common where I live.
**I live in the Boston area.
