Crib mattress protector ?

Is it recommended to use one? My baby spits up a crazy amount and I feel like without one he will destroy his mattress super quick.  What’s recommended now? My sister told me it’s not recommended To use one because they are breathable and could be a suffocation hazard. Any thoughts/ advice?

"Breathable" is marketinf with fear in mind.
You don't need the mattress to be "breathable". You need a mattress that is firm and smooth, not soft and squishy. If you put the waterproof sheet and a fitted sheet on top of it, it should stay smooth, not wrinkly and that is all that is needed. 
Try to press your nose on a hard wood floor and breathe can you? Is the wood breathable?

Yes use one. It goes under the sheet so it really doesn’t matter. Your mattress will get really icky really quick without one.

I didn’t use one the first few months and i regretted it. She would spit up a lot and it stained her mattress pretty badly. I had to buy a new mattress and a protector this time.
