Need to know if I’m tripping

My boyfriend bought me new tires last week because I needed them badly to drive Instacart. I told him I’d pay him back “next week” and I made enough to be able to pay him back today. He wasn’t upset but he asked when I was going to let him know when I’d pay him back… he knows I’m going to but he felt like a courtesy was needed…. Am I wrong for feeling like he should just let me pay him back without saying anything? I need honest opinions so I know that I am wrong for feeling that way
