Why do people get put on bed rest?

Just curious as I've seen pregnant people post about it! Not sure if we do that here in the uk? Never heard of it? What are the reasons and why?! H

With my first I was put on bed rest from 35weeks onwards due to high blood pressure.

I've had 3rd trimester bleeding due to a friable cervix.  They almost put me on bedrest but it has slowed down (and so have I) and I'm not dilated at all so they haven't made me yet. If I were to start dilating they would put me on bedrest.

I was on modified bed rest (4 hours of rest for every hour of activity) and complete pelvic rest. pretty much I could just walk around my house, cook dinner, to go to the bathroom, maybe run a quick errand etc. mine was for 1st trimester bleeding. Once my bleeding stopped I had to continue the bed rest for 6 weeks. I didn’t stop bleeding until 22 weeks. So I was on restrictions until 28 weeks.

I have a terribly weak and short cervix that causes me to go into preterm labor. I was on bed rest to keep as much weight off my cervix as possible. 
There’s many reasons for it. 
I will say that my last high risk doctor didn’t believe in the benefits of bed rest. He recommended light activity and no lifting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was put on bed rest for my second for having horrible symphasis pubis dysfunction. Then with my third due to PPROM which is where my amniotic sac tore prematurely and I was leaking fluid.

Why do people get put on bed rest?
