The hormone surge captured by an OPK triggers egg release. At some time after release, the egg is picked up and moved to the fallopian tube.
The egg can be fertilized at any time from being picked up by the fallopian tube to entering the uterus. This takes several days.
The sperm does a team effort to penetrate the cervical plug and swims randomly without brain in any direction. Some sperm will reach the fallopian tube. Sperm will then continue swimming up the fallopian tube for several days or until it dies/runs out of energy. This can take several days.
If enough sperm reaches the egg, they will use their motility to penetrate the various layers surrounding the egg.
If there is enough viable, live sperm in the fallopian tube when the egg enters the tube, it will be fertilized. If live viable sperm enters the fallopian tube when the egg is in the tube, that will also fertilize the egg.
Then in the last step, the uterus must accept and embed the egg into the lining. Eg, the egg must "stick".
If there's something wrong with the sperm or the egg, the uterus will reject the egg.
