I would recommend 1 pack of 3-4 footie pajamas in size newborn. That's it. If you need more after baby's born, you can buy more then.

I was told I was having a big baby so i didn’t get any. Just went straight to 0-3 months. 
She was just under 6lbs when she came home and was in newborn until at least 9 weeks. So we had to buy extras. Id buy maybe a weeks worth just to be on the safe side. Leave the tags on and don’t wash until you know you’ll use them so they can be returned if necessary.

In my case they either never fit newborn clothes or they only did for a few weeks. So I always just bought 0-3 months and any newborn clothing was a gift from someone else.

I would buy only a few. You don’t know what size baby will be. My first was 7lbs 15oz so we did not put him in any newborn clothing since it only goes up to 9lbs. I had made the assumption my second would be the same so I didn’t buy any & then he came out 6lbs 13oz lol so I had to rush to the store after we left the hospital. Even then he was only in NB size for a few weeks. Both of my kids were in size 0-3 and 3-6 the longest

I would say about one weeks worth. Depending on the size of your baby they may not be in NB size for long (or at all). My daughter actually wore NB for a few months. However, if you have access to wash clothes affordably/easily, you can just do a small weekly load with your burp cloths and blankets and the baby will have plenty to wear. If it would be difficult to launder frequently then you may want more but I would wait to buy until you know if your baby will actually need that size.

Not that many. Not all babies wear newborn clothes. I only have like 5 outfits and my newborn didn't wear any of them lol
