NIPT - accurate for you?

We had some concerning things show up on the ultrasound, so they did a NIPT. I haven’t gotten the results yet, but I’m reading there are a lottttt of people who have false positives. Freaking out! I don’t really want to do an amnio I’m already such high risk and tbh I don’t think baby is strong enough to handle an amnio.

The NIPT doesn’t say positive or negative. It says how high or low the risk is.

NIPS is a screening tool. It is designed to pick up as many true positive babies as possible without missing anyone, so there is an increased number of false positives. The results are more reliable if the testing is negative. But with that being said, it is still a screening tool and not diagnostic.
Even if it is abnormal, you do not have to do an amniocentesis if you choose not to. The miscarriage rate for amniocentesis varies between centers, but it’s typically around 1/350. If NIPS is abnormal and you choose not to have an amniocentesis, your doctor may offer to follow you as though your baby has the diagnosis out of caution.
Also, NIPS only screens for a small handful of chromosome problems, it cannot screen for every possible genetic difference a baby may have.

My first was accurate, my second was flagged for abnormalities. He was perfectly normal. Later detailed sonograms confirmed that he was fine.

Ok, for “false positives” the thing you need to keep in mind is that all the results mean is YOU have a 25% chance of passing it to your baby. If your baby is at risk, it just means you could not the baby will. A lot of the time of you are at risk, your baby is at risk but it doesn’t mean that they will have any genetic problems. It’s a maybe, a possibility, a 25% chance that YOU could pass it to your baby. This is how it was explained to me by a high risk doctor when I did my NIPT. Took a week (Monday to Monday so I guess like 5 days if you take out the weekend) to get my results back and me and my baby are low risk. I did it last year with my son also, again low risk. The coolest part about NIPT is it can tell you the gender of your baby (and unlike others you can buy like Sneak Peek or Peekaboo, it’s more accurate for the gender). Hugs xx

I had it done at 20 weeks do to something they found on my anatomy scan. It came back low risk for everything. That being said, I think they stop doing amniocentesis testing around 20-22ish weeks. I wasn't going to get it done anyways 🤷🏼‍♀️ the risk of miscarriage with it is just to high for my liking.
