Gifts for your child that you don't like...
Hey guys!
Just curious about everyone's perspective on this. I am 20 weeks pregnant and have a daughter who turned 2 yesterday! For the last 4 years we have been residing 2300 miles from our family living in a very small apartment in a very big city - a place that we truly outgrew when my daughter was born, so are moving back home in February to be closer to family with a little more room. A cross country move, a toddler and pregnant 🫠
A few out of state family members wanted to buy my daughter birthday gifts but with the move going on I asked for mainly books for her (which she loves) and offered smaller suggestions to keep our moving load as light as possible.
My husband's aunt, who's in her 70s and had a stroke about two years ago took the liberty to ignore my suggestions and buy my daughter a whole full sized student desk and chair (without asking my husband or myself first).
The problem is this: I simply don't want a desk. After living in such a small space for so long I have been dreaming since the day I brought my daughter home of designing and creating space in her own room for her personality and in our new place I really wanted to get a small toddler table she could do projects at WITH her future sibling or cousins. Not a single desk for her to sit at alone. The room isn't big enough for both. I really, really wish she had asked me before buying a bulky piece of furniture (especially because the box is HUGE and heavy!! More to shuffle around and to move cross country 😫). There is no receipt and no return address either.
I think it's so thoughtful she wanted to give something to my daughter and I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but now I am feeling stuck with a furniture piece I don't want because it might hurt her (or my husband's families) feelings. I feel like I have two options.. 1) tell her I don't want it and ask her to return it NICELY of course or 2) just shut up and shuffle it around my new house and hope nobody asks about it.
Neither option feels right.
What would you do if you were me?
