Doula questions for those who had/have one (TW: miscarriage details)

TW: Details about my miscarriage below.

I am considering a doula for my third baby and have questions. I am currently ttc after a miscarriage in October where I lost our third baby around 13 weeks. I am so excited and so terrified to get a positive test again. Part of what I struggled most with after my miscarriage is just wanting more comfort and support through the whole process of miscarrying. I was terrified, in so much pain, caring for my two toddlers and ended up hemorrhaging at home during my miscarriage. I was taken to er by ambulance and the doctors were able to stop the bleeding without an emergency d and c since the pregnancy had passed at home, but I spent a night there and was close to needing a blood transfusion. I saw the fetus and placenta when I miscarried at home and could hold him/her and it was truly heartbreaking for me. Shortly after I almost passed out due to blood loss and my husband called an ambulance. I still have bad dreams about seeing the fetus. My doctor gave me a brief summary of what it would be like beforehand, but i felt totally unprepared still when it happened. The amount of pain, seeing the fetus, etc. was much worse than I expected. I guess I am wondering if you hire a doula do they support you through first trimester or do they really only get involved once you get closer to labor? I think it would have helped me a lot to have someone to call or talk to throughout the process, to feel safer and more prepared. Just wondering if that is something a doula provides or if it is really just labor support.
