How do you teach a half Mexican child Spanish ?

So I am biracial black/white but the person who got me pregnant is Mexican. He and his family speak Spanish however he is not involved in the child’s life and hasn’t even told his parents I’m having a baby, so my daughter will not have access to his side of the family. I know some Spanish from taking two years of it in college but I’m nowhere near fluent yet. What are some tips to help a child become bilingual? I want her to be connected to her Latina side. When she gets older I will try to get her in a Spanish immersion school if possible.

I’d talk to her in Spanish little things while she’s a baby. Normal things baby/toddlers would say learn to say it yourself and say it to her in both languages. When you play her baby music play Spanish baby songs. When she’s old enough teach her colors numbers animals little sentences. Let her watch Spanish or bilingual shows. If she’s learning you’re learning too. Once she gets into the school they can teach her further than what you know.

YouTube! So many educational videos for kids that are bilingual on YouTube. They learn so much from it. Also with the words you do know, speak them to her. You can even go to google translate with a sentence to help you out as well so you can speak more Spanish with her

I’d suggest learning Spanish as you teach her. Start with the little things you already know, speak to her in Spanish and English starting as a baby. There’s tons of apps like DuoLingo that can help you learn as well. Spanish immersion school is a great choice for her whe she’s older.

I was spoken to only in Spanish and my parents left me to learn English once I started Pre K. So basically I was spoken to and spoke only Spanish for the first 3 years of my life. Once in school it did not take me long to learn English but then again that's not too much of a surprise as children are "sponges" at that age. And once I started learning English in school, at home, my parents started speaking to me in English and in Spanish to make sure I kept both languages. I am doing the exact same with my children and those are my kids that are now in school have transitioned to learning English fairly quickly.

You should definitely try to learn Spanish too! It'll be a lot easier if you're bilingual because you can practice together as baby grows up!.

So we are finally at the point now where my son is starting to talk. He hasn’t said anything in Spanish yet but he does understand a lot already. My husbands aunt told me what helps is finding the word that is easier to say… so for instance, saying “agua” is easier than saying “water”  so with my son he knows that when we tell him to get his agua or get his water, he always grabs his water bottle. There is a YouTube channel that sings nursery rhymes in both English and Spanish which has helped my son and he really loves watching them. And if your daughter will be going into daycare at all I’d see if wherever you live has a daycare that speaks both Spanish and English. Or if you get a nanny you could hire one that also speaks spanish

As she’s learning how to talk say it in both English and Spanish like hello, hola! How are you? Como es ta? Very good! Muy bein! So that way she’s able to hear both sides and it’ll become easier for her to learn. You can also get the Duo app for yourself to learn more Spanish and as you learn more you can teach her what you’re learning. There’s also some apps for preschoolers that teach Spanish too

I’m literally almost in your exact situation. I’m Palestinian my ex husband is Dominican . I have a daughter. He left. So I want her to know Arabic and Spanish 🫣 I’m struggling . I’m not fluent in either. But so far I put her in a Spanish class when she was younger and I plan to look for an immersion or bilingual elementary school. Immersion is literally the only way! But what others said. Play you tube stuff for her . There’s lots of resources in Spanish! And ur gonna have to learn with her to help reinforce . Kudos to u❤️
