Unsure how to handle this nicely

I have a buddy who needed a place to crash.

He has been in a toxic relationship for way too long. I’ve gotten both sides of the story and no he isn’t perfect but truthfully his ex was brutal. Violent. Abusive. Police have been involved before. Then she goes crazy and cries begging for him back - years of this nonsense. They have two kids together which makes it even more difficult. A 7 year old and a newborn.

A month ago she was going insane over such a small thing and he grabbed the 7 year old and left (he didn’t take the new born because he’s breast fed mostly) went to the police station, filed a report on her and insisted on a wellness check because it was unsafe for his kids to stay there). As horrible as it may sound here it’s a good thing she said and did some things because it is a mark against her - she messaged him threatening and all saying she would kill herself if he didn’t come home. So the cops took the baby giving him to my buddy and his sister who happens to have a little one is supplying him with breast milk.

Anyways. He and his two kids are with me. He’s going through hell I know this.

But like I’m not independently wealthy - I’m helping him a ton here and I would keep helping him but now I’m like it’s been a few months here and when I ask him for help - like dishes or could you grab this on your way home - he gets annoyed with me like I’m inconveniencing him. I know it isn’t tit for tat here. But I haven’t asked him for any money, I’m helping him out, but is it tacky to be a little frustrated that he doesn’t want to help? Again like if we are out of something and I ask him to get it it’s a huge deal or sigh or gets forgotten like I asked him for a million bucks not a bag of milk….

I don’t wanna ask him to leave but like I don’t think it’s wrong to ask for some help without getting grief for it??
