How long nicu for preemies?

How long was your preemie in the nicu and how many weeks were they born at? I’m high risk and was curious about other Womens stories. I know everyone is different and every baby is different, but I’d love to hear about your nicu story or even if you have a FRIENDS nicu story. Thank you!!

It totally depends. And “preemie” can mean many different ages. Also some babies are born 35 weeks and feed well and can go home within days. But other babies are born 37 weeks and don’t feed well or thrive until 39 weeks. It really is different for different babies. If your baby is born before 35 weeks there is a good chance you will be there a few weeks. My baby was a only 2 weeks premature and had a 2 week stay. Often what keeps a preemie in the NICU is not meeting feeding goals. At our NICU our baby had to consume 100% of his bottles for 48 hours in order to be discharged. Many preemies are too sleepy to eat a lot. Traumatic births also can create longer stays bc it is a “shock” to the nervous system, and there’s no way to predict how the birth will go.

My oldest was born at 35w 4Ibs 7oz and spent 21 days in the NICU over Christmas and new years…. It was awful! They took amazing care of her but it was the hardest recovery I had because I was constantly worrying about her. It also sucked because it took away from the time I got to spend with her bonding before going back to work. She was a little delayed in hitting some of her milestones and ahead in others (so normal) and now is a sassy happy 4 year old. My second they thought may have to go to the NICU but she was born at 37w and did not have to go thankfully.

My first was born at 32+6. She was in the NICU for exactly 3 weeks. Came home weighing 4lbs 14oz.

My 35 weeker stayed for 7 days (in hindsight I wish she stayed an extra week). She was 4lbs 11oz and dropped to 3lbs 13oz by day 5. She was barely 4lbs at 7 days which was just big enough for her car seat. She’s now 21m and thriving. 
My 27 weeker spent 117 days in the nicu. He was born 2lbs 9oz. He came home on oxygen and was off in within a month. He’s now 8m (in 2 days) and is a pretty normal 5 month old! He’s now 14lbs 9oz. 
My brothers daughter was full term and spent 5 days due to an infection.

Step mom. She likes to have her babies at 35-36 weeks even with precautions in place to prevent preterm labor. First was in the NICU for a week or two. I can't remember. She was with another guy at the time so I only heard the story. Bubs came into our lives when he was 2. Second was in for less than an hour. She was doing alright on her own but they also did a lot beforehand expecting preterm labor so that probably helped give her a better chance at a lesser stay in the NICU. Third was preterm labor they tried to stop for weeks and finally couldn't anymore. Ended in an emergency C-section because he was breech. He had a very brief NICU stay as well. Probably again because they anticipated he'd come early and did things to help with that.
