Do I have a right to be upset?

My boyfriend and I have been together for 6 months now. We’ve know each other since we were 14, we are 29, but life had other plans and we dated other people. We came back into each others lives again. I have met all his family and he has met my daughter. My family is scattered so he hasn’t met all of mine. We are currently trying to have a baby, first month trying. His uncle was on hospice for quite sometime and passed away yesterday. He was telling me about the funeral being on Tuesday. I told him I’ll make sure to take off work so I can be there. He told me he doesn’t want me there. I’m so confused as to why and honestly feel hurt by it. But I also never met this uncle and I’m trying to be mindful that he’s grieving, but this is something that feels weird to me. Do I have a right to be upset?

You’ve only been together for 6 months, and although you’ve know each other for longer, he probably just isn’t where he can share that type of process with you. Try and understand that it’s not personal, he just needs that space with his uncle and family. He might also know he will likely cry and isn’t ready to have you see him in that state of vulnerability.

I get you being sort of offended, but you do not have a right to be upset about this. It’s his uncle that you have never met. He has a right to grieve without you considering you’ve only been together for six months and never met the man. If he asked you to be there, that’s one thing, but I’m unsure of why you would’ve expected to go to a funeral for someone you didn’t even know.
