Does breastfeeding usually hurt when you first start?

Is there anything that can be done to ease the pain of breastfeeding for new mothers? Is it normal for it to hurt when first starting to breastfeed?

It was a bit painful when I started with my son but only for about a week. They make nipple covers that I’ve heard can alleviate some of that.

Yes, it hurt me both times. I started using nipple guards but the lactation consultants as the hospital were mad I had them and yeah, you and your baby can eventually become dependent on them. Other than that have nipple creams and cooling gels. Getting a proper latch is also key to eventually being pain free.

It was horribly painful with my first for a while, it took a bit to feel like my nipples toughened up, didn't hurt at all with my son but they were close together in age, this time it'll be 3.5 years between so I'm curious how rough it'll be this time.

Yes, but it’s bc the saliva from baby is acidic, you’re already sensitive (or I was) and they are literally pulling at the area with suckling. Proper latch is a necessity, as it makes a big difference. Once your breast get more used to it, maybe a couple weeks, then it’s not as dry and crackly.
