What are the factors that contribute to the cost of giving birth in hospitals? Can the cost vary depending on the type of delivery?

Mostly depends on insurance. I had great insurance with my first (we were union) and our bill for epidural/c-section/5 day stay/cardiac testing for baby was $0; with my second, repeat c-section and shorter stay (during height of pandemic) with new employer’s insurance our bill was around $2000 total 🤷🏻‍♀️

C sections costs more, epidural costs more, if baby has any problems after birth it will cost more. The simpler the birth, the cheaper it will be. I had a vaginal birth with an epidural but then my son needed to be in the hospital a few extra days after he was born. Ended up being around $35,000 total before insurance and we had to pay $12K out of pocket 🫤

I went to be induced with my first son on a Tuesday morning, but ended up having a c-section that Wednesday night. I didn’t leave the hospital until that Saturday afternoon. It was around $6000 total with 2 insurances & that was just my care, not my son’s. His was $400ish, I believe. I am definitely trying for a VBAC this time around, so the hospital stay isn’t as long, & I would’ve wanted to try for a home-birth if it didn’t make my Husband so nervous.
