When should my son have given up his blankie

Question

My son has this baby blankie my ex mother in law made him before she was born. Me and my ex mother in law did not get along. She always annoyed me. She couldn't let anyone else talk. She was constantly talking over people. She was terrible at time management. She was late to EVERYTHING! It was so annoying. My ex husband said his mom went a long time with undiagnosed ADHD and she wasn't diagnosed until her 40's. I don't understand how that was an excuse for her behavior but anyway she gave him this blankie and I feel like my son has gotten too old for it. He's almost 12 and starts middle school next year. I personally think it's time for it to go and I just want to trash it but my mom said my son may never forgive me if I did that and it's not like he's dragging it to school with him. Still. I think he doesn't need it anymore. But what do you think the appropriate age to not have a blankie anymore is?

It’s sounds like you just want rid of it because you don’t like where/who it came from. 
If he isn’t taking it out the house what’s the issue… everyone has a favourite blanket or jumper

My husband is 35 and still has the blanket he had as a kid. It means a lot to him and just to protect it we dont use it anymore, it is a keepsake now, but he had it on his bed when I met him a decade ago. Honestly sounds like you are just pissed a womab you didnt like gave him something so special to him and you're jealous. Get over it and if you do anything to that blanket, especially trash it, you'd be an epic bitch. Be happy he has something that means so much to him as you keep saying ex-mother in law...which I'd call your sons grandma.

Yikes.
I am 35 and I still have the blanket my great great grandmother made for me (I used it for both my babies) and the stuffed bunny I used to sleep with. It went with me to university, moved with me to my first apartment, and my first house. It sits in a cabinet next to my bed. I will never get rid of them.

My niece is 16 she keeps her special blanket in her bed and her stuffed animal that my mom gave her in the bed as well. I think this is more your issue and your resentment towards her. He will give it up when he is ready. Either out of embarrassment if he has a sleep over or his emotional support thing. We all have things that soothe us. Even as adults. Smoking. Alcohol. Food, emotional support animals. . Things from our childhood. Movies and shows that we love. Favorite clothing or outfits. Pets. Etc.  I would leave him be. My niece is 16 they had a sleep over and all the girls brought stuffed animals. Their own pillows or blankets from home etc. things that make you feel comfortable or safe. Not like he still has a pacifier in his mouth or anything like they. He’s a kid. Let him be a kid. It’s your issue from your own resentment with her. Which has nothing to do with him. He just likes the blanket.

I would maybe advise your son not to take it to school, it may get ruined, lost and he could get bullied. But dont throw it away. Thats a very selfish act. I have a childhood teddy, and although i have fully outgrown the daily comforter of it i still wouldnt give or throw it away. When i was 11. I still liked to cuddle my teddy on a night, my mother tried ripping it apart. She pulled one of his legs off and said it can go in bin now. I cried for so long, but i sewed his leg back on..and after that i didnt trust my mother. And infact disliked her a little. My favourite teddy is now in my babies bedroom, so when hes born he can find comfort in it. Dont throw your sons blankie away. You will mentally and emotionally affect him.

You must have never seen the Impractical Jokers where one of the Jokers, Murr a grown ass adult, still has his blankie. Sounds like you want to get rid of it bc of the vendetta you have against your ex-mil. It’s unfair to make your son a recipient of your inability to manage your emotions and bitterness.
