Doula?

Question

Has anyone had an unmediated birth without a doula? I’m planning on having no pain medication (hospital birth), I spent $200 on the mama natural birthing classes & the class today talked all about how important it is to have a doula. Unfortunately though i’m on medicaid and doulas aren’t insured, and we are just keeping our heads above water right now with the money we have in savings. We really don’t have the money to hire a doula. Now I’m second guessing my ability to birth naturally. Any advice?

Do you have a friend/family member that could be in the hospital room as act as a doula? Maybe someone who's given birth themselves and can sympathize with what youre going through?

I was induced with my first. Hypertension. I did get the epidural because I couldn't handle pitocin contractions. I had 2 spontaneous labors after that. Both unmedicated. I never took birthing classes or read up on much of anything. Just my labors all went really fast. From 5 cm to pushing with my 1st was an hour and a half. From 5 cm to pushing with my second was about 45 mins. From 6 cm to pushing with my 3rd was about 20 mins. Both my spontaneous labors went too quickly for anything. Once I was in it my body kinda just took over and did it's thing. Only way to get through it is to just do it. I won't lie and say it felt good. Labor doesn't feel good. But I did it. And now I'm done because I'm pretty sure if I had another baby I'd be giving birth at home. I'm higher risk for bleeding out, so giving birth at home, accidentally, isn't a good idea.

I've had 2. I am not a person to want help so wanting a doula wasn't even on my mind. Hell I didnt even want my husband to say anything...his job was to hold a leg and be silent. I had 2 super easy births with zero medication and honestly hardly any pain. You can always go in wanting to try to go unmedicated and can change your mind when the time comes, nothing wrong with adjusting plans as you go. Even friends and family who had very very painful births have said they don't care after and forget a lot of it as soon as they are holding their baby. Millions of women birth without doulas so I am sure you will be fine. Hope you have a great experience no matter what happens!!

I had two unmedicated births in hospitals without a doula. Educate yourself and do lots of reading! There are YouTube channels dedicated to this sort of thing, as well. The more mentally prepared you are, the better you will be able to cope on your own and/or with your partner.

i did mama natural but it didn't help me with my first child during labor- it doesn't teach you how to cope with the pain. Second time around i did Hypnobabies and hired a doula- didn't even need the doila because i was so capable and prepared with my breathing practice (it does take a while to learn and practice), but i 100% recommend. Cheaper and more effective than a doula

Sure. I've had two hospital births without a doula and no meds (I also refused IV).  I'm not sure what advice to give. I've also had two births that required medication. What is your worry?
