My sister is about to be 12 and just got her first phone. My parents both work and she’s alone sometimes, plus she goes to her friends houses, and my parents like that they can contact her throughout the day. They have her an old phone and got a $40 CAN phone plan… but you could also do prepaid ones and they can only use it to call/text you.
She isn’t allowed to be on it all day every day or have social media yet, until grade 7.

I got my first phone in the 7th or 8th grade, mostly because I either rode the bus or had to wait for my parents to pick me up from school so they wanted to be able to communicate with me. it was just a simple flip phone so I’d probably do that around that age

When they start driving or working. 
I always hate hearing the emergency excuse to give your 9 year old a phone (unless divorce or abuse is involved). Your child shouldn’t even be unsupervised at 9 so no need. I personally didn’t get my first cell phone till my freshman year of college at 19 😂 I turned out perfectly fine. If I was at work or had an emergency I would just ask to use someone’s phone but that only happened twice in my 19 years haha.

My son got his first phone at age 5. I was a single mom and worked two jobs. He would call me and text me a lot. We didn't see each other much but I had to pay the bills.

When they need one which may vary. My nephew does a lot of sports and was given a very basic phone to text in 4th grade so he could communicate easier before practices or if something changed. Also hia friends oarents.dont have landlines so being able to get a parwnt without having to ask to use a cell if something happened they didnt wanna make public or could be embarrassing. Wanted to leave a sleepover or felt scared. So we will see as my kids get older bur the fact landlines and payphones are non existent now makes it probable by the time my oldest is end if grade school it will be more a need for safety. I didnt get my 1st phone until I could drive so if I broke down I had a way to call for help. But that was a long time ago and things are different now. Will assess as my kids grow up and decide from there.

I’m still pregnant with my first so this could very well change but at this time, I’m thinking no phones until at least 10 (that’s when I got my first one). Though I’d want to get one made more for kids in the sense that it’d be easy to restrict access to certain things as I know I was exposed to wayyy too much right away. I don’t want to do tablets either. I’ve seen the way it’s affected my step-nephews and am not a fan.
