Epidural ?

Im a first time mom and wondering how long the epidural lasts, do you get multiple injections and when should you ask your doctor to get it done?

My first lasted for ever. I had to get it redosed because the first med they gave me didn’t numb me at all. I couldn’t feel anything after I got the different med. like during pushing it felt like I was holding someone else’s legs. I couldn’t feel any contractions and had to look at the monitor to know when to push. They turned it off pretty soon after delivery but I still couldn’t feel one of my legs for a few days after delivery. 
My second epidural was a walking epidural which was super weird. I could feel everything but had no pain, all I could feel was pressure. So I could feel my babies head crowning and I could feel her coming out but 0 pain. My body was able to feel contractions and I definitely felt an urge to push. I was even able to walk with assistance after getting it. I had a button I could press to get more meds every 10 mins. It wore off probably with in an hour or two of them turning it off. 
Idk if it was the difference in the epidurals but my first I pushed for over 3 hours and my second I pushed for 15 mins.

I can’t recall how long my first one lasted but it definitely got me through delivery. For me they had it on like a push button so if I felt I needed more i would push it , but they do have a limit to how many times it can be pushed in a certain amount of time. I would suggest asking your nurse to let you know when you’re able to get it and when you’re running out of time to get it . That way you know if you want to hold off .

With my first they stopped my epidural shortly after birth. I think I had my epidural for 3ish hours. It was a continuous flow kind. In labor for 26ish hours total.
With my second child I had the push button one. I could push the button every 10 minutes. However that one had failed on me. It only worked around my belly and my right leg. My left leg never went numb. Eventually it quit working all together and i could feel every contraction. Due to complications with my son and the failed epidural I had to have a spinal done for the c section.

It’s like an IV but placed with a super long needle directly into your spine. It lasts until they turn it off and take it out. Also I do not recommend but to each their own! I’d recommend researching it more thoroughly

Sounds like you need to read up a little bit on what the epidural actually is. Its not a shot - its a thin tube going directly into your spine with a constant flow of the medicine.
