Small for gestational age

Long post but I have questions****

I TTC on December 19th and 21st and I had my first positive test on January 1st. Blood work showed I had been pregnant for 3-4 weeks, (gestational age based on LMP added up)

Fast forward to week 23 and baby was growing perfectly on track with this measurement, everything looked great.

Around week 26 my BP increased and I had a ton on swelling, was not diagnosed with preeclampsia but put on meds and went for weekly NSTS.

NSTS were always fine but we never did reactive or non reactive. Ultrasounds were not being done either, only NSTS.

I went to the hospital twice for decreased movement and high BP. They never measured baby but did ultrasounds and NST and baby was “fine” and sent me home.

Fast forward again to 28-29ish weeks I got taken out of work due to swelling.

Went back in 2 weeks later for regular visit with NST (Monday) still swelling and BP still high even on meds. Dr wanted to retest for preeclampsia.

Went back in on that Thursday for results and another NST, I had only felt baby once that day and I mentioned it to the doctor. Heart rate was steady but I was concerned that we never did reactive tests and there was no increase in heart rate. I was sent to the hospital for further monitoring.

I had an emergency c section due to baby’s heart rate decelerating (first time) on the monitor. They also said because baby was not receiving enough blood flow to the placenta and it was already calcified. When baby was born cord was wrapped three times but baby was still a good color and breathing.

Anywho, I had an 8 week early baby measuring 28 weeks 3 days. Small for gestational age. Keep in mind my due date was never changed because first trimester ultrasound baby was on track with LMP, also 23 weeks and 8 days was the exact day I had my first positive test so I was obviously not pregnant from that day.

Why would this not have been caught? What could’ve caused the slow of growth at around 28 weeks? Are placenta issues hard to catch? Has anyone else experienced this?

Baby is in the NICU currently and is doing really well which is such a blessing.****
