Been together 8 years. He told me years ago the ring was coming. We don’t live together yet. We live separately, with our parents. We are in our mid-late 20’s. Before y’all get on us for living with parents, we live in California. He’s said our financial situation is what is stopping us from getting married but I told him I don’t mind just getting legally married and then married later down the road after we are financially able to do a wedding

Are you guys talking about moving in together? He probably doesn’t want to get married if you guys are going to be living separately.
Finances is a legit reason to want to wait.

You guys haven't even moved in together in 8 years then this relationship isn't going anywhere. Why isn't he working on being an adult and moving out of mommy and daddys ? Is that the kind of man you want to marry ? Its time to move on

This seems like a relationship that hasn’t progressed. I’m in a HCOL area too, but that’s not going to change. Seems like an excuse. So you get engaged, then what? $$ going to all of a sudden appear to move in together? 
Can either of you move to the others parents house?

If hes more concerned about finances, then he more than likely will never marry you. Sounds like hes got commitment issues. You dont need a wedding to get married. If thats what hes stressing on, then drop the wedding as a whole, unless its important to you. Either way you have some figuring out to do.

i personally wouldn’t rush marriage until you’re stable and on your own. being married won’t really change anything IMO.

I would prioritise making a realistic plan on getting to a financial place where you could live together. It doesn’t seem logical to plough money into a wedding then each go back to your respective parents’ houses as husband and wife. Understand you want a show of commitment after 8 years though 🫶🏻
