Rental home turned into a nightmare with RAT infestation
Looking for advise! Rental home has turned into a nightmare!! My dream since I was a child has been to have a homestead. Now, I’m a mother to 4 children ages 6,3,2, and 5 months. We lived on a horse farm for two years, I already have a lot of homesteading skills with canning, making our own homemade remedies, soap making, sewing, and more. My best friend who is twice my age lives completely off grid teaches me so much. My in laws also own a small farm with cows and geese.
My husband is a high school English teacher. He also wants to have a small farm and homestead. We put those dreams on hold. We moved into his grandparents rental property to rent for 6 months and then buy it in January. Our 5 year plan was to buy it, resell it in about 5 years, and then take the steps to begin our farm homestead.
However, we’ve lived in this house since July. There has been problem after problem. It’s a 2,200 sq foot home built in the 70’s. It’s beautiful and has plenty of space, but I’ve been praying of getting out of here! The roof is leaking in multiple spots, I’m 99% sure there’s a mold problem, almost all of the appliances starting breaking weeks after moving in, multiple water leaks, and the newest issue.. a horrible RAT infestation in the crawl space of the home and the ceiling of the garage and entire down stairs. They made their way to our kitchen which is why I found out about the rats in the first place. They’re nesting in the insulation. The rats chewed wires to our sunroom and the electricity went out in there and some of the kitchen as well. They had a nest in the back of our refrigerator where the mortar is and chewed on wires. I hear them crawl in the walls in the laundry room at night.
Professionals came out today and said we’re never going to get rid of them, but replacing the insulation may help. We’ve had traps, bait stations and all set out since we spotted them. They said this has been a long preexisting issue. I no longer have any desire to buy this home. I’m actually ready to pack and go now!! Before this even happened I told my husband I wanted to go ahead and move to somewhere with land. Why wait?! My husband isn’t sure what to do. He feels obligated to buy it since that’s what we said we would do. We’re paying a lot in rent to his grandparents. Water bill is through the roof due to water leaks they won’t fix.
We were under the impression this house was in great condition when we moved in. His grandparents rented this home out for 15 years it’s completely paid off.
We have 5 acres of land that already has hook ups for power and water. Of course im saying I’m ready to go ahead and put a camper or a trailer while we build. Unfortunately, my husband isn’t to that point yet and I’m being more emotional about all of this.
Any advise??
