People need to rethink how we talk about post college options
Gonna stay anon on this post as I dont want anyone searching me (haopened last tike I commented on a similar post) or harassing me. So I am a home inspector and also teach in the highschool as a CTE instructor for the building class. I love that trades are being talked about more as a viable and respectable option post high school now. I am glad more info is being given out as some kids are not meant for a 4 yr university track. I am not haopy though that what was dont to me when I graduated HS in 2002 where college was shoved down our throats as the only option has swung to trades. I live in midwest in a small semi-rural area and so many here are pushing trades as the option and bashing college. What has happened is trade schools have jacked up costs, the market has flooded with a huge number of new electricians and plumbers especially which is hurting the graduates, and quality is dropping in building. 5 yrs ago the electrical school near me was $6000 year and they came out making 65-75K ish starting. That same school is not 22K a year and the average starting pay (if you can find a job) is 55K. More people are also starting their own businesses and the amount of things needing fixed on new home builda has skyrocketed...and not even hidden things but like doors that don't close, trim not attatched to walls, or shingles on roofs that are not even close to done well or finished. People who shouldn't be doing these jobs are doing them because they are chasing the money and those buying homes will suffer because shitty inspectors do exist and a home will.pass that shouldn't. But what the people screaming on facebook that college is a scam are missing is every contractor, plumbing company, roofing company, etc is missing is to own these trade businesses we need teachers, accountants, scientist's, doctors, IT/tech people, care givera for kids, marketing people, lawyers, etc. We need college AND trades. So if you are a trade is the save all person please stop because it isnt true. Trades are great for many.but come.with many cons. College is great for many and comes with many cons. We need both sides and they both need to be given as equal options because if you have no teachers your contractor won't know math. If you have no medical professionals when the roofer gets a nail in the hand they will have subpar care. If you have no scientists advances in materials dont happen and those make homes safer. So as someone who teaches a trade and also literally inspects trades they are not the greatest thing ever with a guaranteed high income like many are saying. And if you buy new construction get 2 inspections from 2 different companies. The things I've seen missed is crazy...and scary. EDIT....an unsafe house is a worry of many. When people have saved for decades to finally buy a home or worked their butts of to buy something and spend too much on an inflated subpar home to then have MAJOR safety issue that cost a ton or put their family in danger it is a big deal. If a home is poorly built then a bad inspector signs off on it many times when you as a buyer sign the papers you agree to buy it as is ake with those issues. So yes everything you said is an issue but doesn't mean what I said isn't just as important.
