My son can't figure out sippy cups but he loves straw cups. Model how to use it and let him play with it and try it out on his own. Use silicone straws so it doesn't hurt his mouth. These are my favorite because of the easy to hold handles and it's all dishwasher safe

Try using your finger to cover the end of the straw “picking up” some if the liquid and putting a few drops in his mouth. 
If you have a softer cup and draw you can very gently squeeze the cup to push the liquid up into his mouth.

I heard the honey bear straw cup is great for learning. I just handed my son the Munchkin weighted straw cup without helping and he figured it out.
